For Professor Munger’s unit, we examined different kinds of abstract artists, and what the intention of their techniques are in evoking human emotion and experience. I chose Claude Monet, and one thing I found particularly interesting about him was that he often use giant canvases, traditionally reserved for paintings of historical figures and the upper class, to depict ordinary every day citizens. An example is the first slide, which is a painting of his wife and child. He still used that size canvas to paint people, only instead he painted everyday people. In fact, most of the more well-known Impressionist paintings involve ordinary subject matters. Through this technique, the audience is able to recognize the old concepts and distinguish Monet’s introduction of a new, avant-garde revolutionary concept. This is a good example of revolution-taking the framework of old ideas and integrating new concepts into them. We never completely lose the old way of life, we just reshape it.
