HUMANITIES: BEING and BECOMING – This is a cumulative list of all the units, including the preorientation we had called Sapere Aude (dare to know), broken down to their core identities. We define who we are through our understanding of our experiences, including memories that we can’t quite recall. I celebrate that I could take part in such a spectacular course, but mourn my inability to remember it all. But I believe that this is what Humanities is- mourning the old while simultaneously celebrating the new. As all of us freshmen entered into this new way of life that college offers, we all reveled in this new found freedom and knowledge. But we also missed the comfort of our old high school lives, the reassurance of routine. These poems reflect the fragments I remember most about each unit, a mini epic poem of sorts, but also relays my sorrow in my human limits. However, Humanities is also about the hope to know more. We are in a constant state of becoming, ever changing, ever moving. Humanities helps us to identify and benchmark these changes and compare them to others’ perceptions of their experience.
